I was adjusting a practice member this morning and she mentioned she was sore from doing some roller skating with her kids over the weekend. She made a comment, half jokingly (which, of course means she half NOT joking) that maybe she’s too old to do “stuff like that”.
Take a Lesson From a Child
Let me tell you. I don’t care how old you are, you’re NOT too old to play. What can happen is that if you don’t move regularly at varying frequencies, intensities, in different ranges of motion, etc you’ll start to lose muscle mass, strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and much more. In short, kids are always ready to do something new because they are always doing something new. Kids are constantly climbing trees, playing with the dog, dancing, etc. I was playing monopoly with my daughters recently and I couldn’t get them to stop bouncing on the exercise ball (they don’t even bother with chairs).
One of the reasons I enjoy crossfit is because every time I go, it’s a different workout. I’ve never had to drag myself to the gym for a crossfit workout. (On the other hand, I’ve been on plenty of runs that I didn’t want to be on because I thought I should for one reason or another) Crossfit is fun, it’s always different, it can be competitive if you want it to, or you can take it at your own pace.
It’s Never Too Late
There’s a lot to be said for the old adage, “You’re only as old as you feel.” No matter your age, it’s always the perfect time to take back your health and your fitness. Here’s a link to an article regarding strength training for “older people”.
So take a lesson from a kid. Do lots of different things. How’s that for simple? It’s good for your body. It’s good for your brain. It’s even good for your relationships! Trust me, you’re more fun to be around when you can move.
